The State of the Hashtag #Overuse

Hashtags were an invention for the social media realm to identify a word or phrase that can categorize a sentence or paragraph.  For example, “Branfart Thoughs is a really humorous blog #funnyblog.”  If I put that on Twitter you could search for funnyblog and my tweet linking to our website would pop up.  You can also use hashtags while watching TV to communicate with other people talking about the same subject, like #TheView #Rocky4.  Pretty neat way to keep up with things.  Fast forward to the present.  Now on social media, everyone is using hashtags in all the wrong ways and it’s getting a little out of control since Facebook also adopted them.  People’s timelines look like what Wile E. Coyote's character says when the anvil falls on his head.  As future Czar of the world I have made a small list of protocols.
  • Only use hashtags when making a punch line, following a TV show or event, or latching on a conversation.
  • No hashtaging more than two words in a row – this is unacceptable: “Good play!#NBA #Finals #Heat #Spurs #LeBron #Cool.”
  • No hashtaging random #words in a sentence, it #just doesn't make sense.
  • Also, a small note, you are still allowed to make a post/tweet/whatever without using a hashtag.  Law does not require them.
One more thought.  To hashtag something you have to hit Shift+3.  Dale Earnhardt’s number was 3!?!?! Could there be a link?  No, because NASCAR fans don't know how to use computers.
